Bespoke fitted furniture hand made by Square Peg Designs for a North London home

Bespoke furniture for North London homes

Wardrobes, alcove units, bookcases and media walls, drawn for one room and made by hand in our workshop. Furniture that belongs to the house rather than standing in it.

Furniture bought fits a room. Furniture made becomes part of it.

Every house worth living in has walls that lean, floors that fall away and a chimney breast in the wrong place. Freestanding furniture argues with all of it. There is a gap behind the wardrobe, a shadow above the bookcase and two inches at the end of the run that nobody knows what to do with.

We are cabinet makers. What we build is cut for the wall it stands against, scribed to the plaster, carried up to the cornice and finished by hand so it reads as part of the architecture. The skirting returns. The mouldings continue. Nothing looks delivered.

The pleasure is in what you cannot see from the doorway. A wardrobe set out around what you actually own rather than a standard rail height. A bookcase lit bay by bay, wired before a single shelf was made. A media wall that swallows the equipment and the cables with it.

One room or a whole house, made by the people who will fit it.

What we make

Pieces built for one house

Fitted wardrobes

Run to the ceiling, scribed to the wall and set out inside around hanging, drawers and shoes rather than a standard layout. Walk in rooms too, painted top to bottom in one colour.

Wardrobe ideas

Alcove units

Cupboards below, shelving above, cut to the recess either side of the chimney breast. Floating shelves fixed into the structure so they carry weight without a bracket in sight.

Alcove ideas

Bookcases and studies

Wall to wall shelving taken up to the cornice and returned around doorways, lit bay by bay so the spines lift. Desks built into the room rather than pushed against it.

Home office ideas

Media walls

Joinery that takes the screen, the equipment and the cabling, with ventilation planned in and access left where an engineer can reach it years from now.

Boot rooms and utility

Full height cupboards, benches with storage beneath and ironmongery heavy enough to be pulled at all day. The hardest working joinery in the house.

Boot room ideas

Staircases

Treads, strings, balustrades and handrails set out from survey, with the space beneath the flight put to use rather than boarded over.

The commission

Four stages. We are present at all of them

You deal with the people making your furniture from the first visit to the last adjustment. There is no account manager between you and the workshop.

I

Survey

We come to the house and measure it ourselves, note the services and the walls that lean, then talk through what the piece has to hold.

II

Drawing

Elevations and the details that decide the finished look. Door style, reveals, mouldings, shelf spacing and where the lighting has to be wired.

III

Making

Built to your dimensions rather than cut down from a standard carcass, then hand painted in the colour chosen for your room.

IV

Fitting

Installed, scribed to the plaster and finished on site so the piece sits level and true in a house where nothing else is.

Where we work

Bespoke furniture across North London

We work in houses across North London and the surrounding areas. Period terraces, family houses and new build extensions, each with its own set of walls that are never quite square.

Questions

Commissioning bespoke furniture

What counts as bespoke furniture?

Furniture made for one room rather than bought in standard sizes. We measure the space, draw the piece to those dimensions and build it in our workshop, so it fits wall to wall and floor to ceiling with no gaps to fill afterwards.

Will it match the mouldings in my house?

Yes. Skirtings, architraves and cornices can be matched so the new joinery reads as original to the house. In a period property that is usually the difference between furniture that looks fitted and furniture that looks installed.

Can you paint it in a colour I have chosen?

Everything is hand painted, so the colour is mixed to what you bring us rather than picked from a fixed range. We can also match a colour already used elsewhere in the house.

Do you fit lighting and power into the joinery?

We plan it in before anything is made, which is the only way to get it right. Shelf lighting, sockets inside cupboards and cable routes for a media wall all have to be decided at drawing stage rather than added later.

How much does bespoke furniture cost?

It depends on the size of the piece, how it is constructed, the ironmongery and the finish. We give you a written quotation against a drawn elevation so you can see what each decision adds before you commit to it.

Can you make furniture for more than one room?

Often we do. Carrying one door style and one palette through a house is what makes it feel considered rather than assembled room by room. It is also easier to plan at the start than to match years later.

Begin

Bring us the room and we will make the piece it needs

Tell us what the space does badly at the moment and we will show you what it could do instead. Every commission starts with a visit to the house.
