A staircase is the first joinery anybody sees and the only piece they touch on the way past. It is also the least forgiving thing we make. Every rise has to match every other rise, the going has to hold across the flight and the handrail has to arrive at the newel at exactly the right height. There is no adjusting it afterwards.
We are cabinet makers. Every staircase in this gallery was cut for the opening it sits in, set out from a survey rather than a standard flight and finished so the treads, strings and balustrade read as one piece rather than three trades meeting in the middle.
The details are where the money shows. An oak tread against a painted string, spindles slim enough to keep the light moving through the flight, a handrail shaped to the hand rather than bought by the metre. None of it costs much more to make well. All of it is obvious when it has not been.
The space underneath is worth planning at the same time, since a run of fitted cupboards below the flight is easier to build while the stair is being made than to add later.
